Momoh-Jimoh Lawal Imam Umar, who was announced new speaker, pledged in his acceptance speech, to collaborate with the executive in moving the state to an enviable heights.
The alleged impeachment of Lawal was done behind close door, as journalists were barred from entering into the complex. However, the embattled Speaker, who survived two previous impeachment attempts, dismissed the purported impeachment, describing it as a “Kangaroo’ arrangement that cannot pass under a sane atmosphere.
But addressing newsmen outside the chamber after the ‘meeting/sitting’; the ‘new’ Majority Leader of the House, Friday Sani, claimed Lawal was removed because of incompetence, greed, betrayal and lack of focus, stressing that he was running the House like a sole proprietor.
Though only five of the members were seen leaving the chamber, but Sani claimed due process was followed in the impeachment of the Speaker , insisting that 15 members signed the impeachment notice a day before and that the House formed a quorum of ‘seven’ yesterday to ratified the process. According to him;
“What is needed in impeaching a speaker starts with collation of signatures and I can assure you that 15 of the 20 members, which is more than 2/3 signed for his impeachment.”
Reacting to his perceived impeachment, the Speaker which described it as a Kangaroo adventure claimed 15 out of the 20 members had being in his house since morning and wondered where the seven quorum were gathered from. He said: “Aside being with me, the 15 members presented a ‘vote of confidence’ on my leadership. The impeachment can only take place in an insane society.”
